House Music started in Chicago in the early 1980s. It became later known in Europe as "The House Sound Of Chicago" It is unknown where house music got it's name. Some say it is namen after the famous nightclub called "The Warehouse" where DJ's like J.M. Silk, Marshall Jefferson, Fast Eddie Smith and Frankei Knuckles would play house music, before it was called that. Another tale is that because the music was largely produced at people's homes, is why it was called House Music.
This is a large category and needs further definition. Disco, Soul and R & B were large influences on House Music. In fact house music with it' signature 4 to the floor kickdrum is a sub genre of Disco and it' roots can be clearly traced to artists like First Choice, Jimmy Bo Horne, James D-Train Williams, Patric Cowley, New Order and Telex. In fact house would not exist without early European New Wave or New Beat embrancing electronic music instruments like synthesizers and drum competers. The tracks the archive collects are at the foundation of house.
The collection now consists of about 10000 vinyl records and about 100000 digital recordings in varing condition. Our goal is to categorise and catalogue the archive and we are constantly on the lookout to see if we can procure a better master
